Dia de los Muertos x Lawndale Art Center

Lawndale's 22nd annual Dia de los Muertos exhibition features locally and nationally known artists' interpretations of the traditional tin devotional painting practice known in Mexico as the retablo.

The fambam went last year and it was absolutely amazing. I need to have my husband dig through his hard drive so I can put up some photos. Can't wait to check out this year's exhibit.

On view October 19- November 7, 2009

Smashing Pumpkins

I saw this pinata on my way home from work and thought it would be perfect for my daughter's halloween/birthday party. So I took my chances to stop and ask for the price. I was floored to hear that this oversized pumpkin was selling for $20.00. The eyes are crooked, but either way it's going to get smashed to pieces, so I could care less. I have to take a picture of this shop/house I stumbled upon because their other pinata themes are well made and reasonably priced as well. I may have found the spot to buy pinatas on the cheap that don't look cheap. I'll know for sure the day of the party after I see how it holds up. I'll follow up.

15 inch Wild Thing dolls

As of late, I've been searching the internetz for our favorite picture book characters. I stumbled upon Goodnight Moon props which are extremely cool to have while reading the book to your tot, we also brought pigeon home from Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and of course we have Elmo, Curious George, and the regular characters. Just having the dolls next to us while reading livens our reading time to another level. My daughter enjoys holding on to them, and moving them from side to side as if they're the one who's doing the talking.

Next on the list are theses 15 in. Wild Thing dolls. They're definitely going on my daughter's birthday wish list, because at $19.99 each, I can use a little help.

"Let the Wild Rumpus Start!"

Just a reminder that Maurice Sendak's classic book Where the Wild Things Are is in theaters near you TOMORROW (Oct 16, 2009). I could only hope Spike Jonze directed his vision to be as epic as the book.

Book Alert

Big frog is big. Quite big. So big this book can't hold her. But with a lot of help from some good friends (pigeon makes a cameo), Big Frog will fit in just fine.

This book is filled with unique pop-ups which are constructed sturdily, and perfectly suited for chubby little hands, this vibrant book will appeal to Mo fans old and new.

Mo Willems keeps doing 'something different'

This is the latest book to our growing book collection, and it's already one of my favorites.
Mo Willems' picture books are definitely aimed at preschoolers, but even adults/toddlers can enjoy the comic style of both his illustrations and his texts. That's a good thing, because Willems' books are the kind of books that kids and adults like myself want to read over and over ... and over. It's definitely another Mo masterpiece. If you haven't picked it up yet, you need to visit you local Barnes & Noble stat!

ZOO BOO

Thanks to a good friend of mine who's a zoo member, the munchkin and I are doing Zoo Boo for free this Sunday. I really need to jump on the zoo member bandwagon because I'm done paying $10.00 per visit. I'm really looking for to this, especially since the weather is suppose to be fall like, last time we hit up the zoo I got a tan on top of my tan, it was horrible hot. So I'm thrilled we finally get a chance to break out our winter/fall hats. I'm hoping for some amazing photos.

A closer look at the Cool Globes.

Siege Of The Skeletons

Beware the siege this October at The Health Museum! This is the first annual Siege of the Skeletons, a community art project featuring papier-mâché skeletons submitted by teams all over Houston.
They will be on display throughout the month of October, so hopefully you get a chance to see them. If you visit the Museum before October 22 you can vote for your favorite skeleton. Viewing the skeletons is included with the purchase of a general admission ticket.

The kiddo and I went to take a look at all the skeleton-ness this Saturday, and we had a blast. They're all very creative, and each had a different message to send. I couldn't make my mind up on which one to vote for so I voted for two.
Time: Tuesday – Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday, 12 – 5 p.m.

The Chronicles of Narnia x Sugar Land

The Houston Museum of Natural Science presents The Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition, on view October 3, 2009 - January 18, 2010 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land.
I can't believe this! When this story was read to me in elementary I was completely blown away. My love for fantasy literture started at that moment. For years after I pretended my entire yard was the land of Narnia. My little sister didn't quite get it, but she played along, and support my reign in our Narnia.

So I'm thrilled to take my daughter to this exhibition, I'll have to fit this somewhere in our calendar, but there's no question about, I need to make room for it, we're going to Sugar Land!

WonderWIld Monster Bash

Wonderwild, Houston's first arts-themed party playground for kids is hosting two Halloween parties. On Friday, October 30, there will be live bands, a children's costume parade, art activities, musical performances and more. On Saturday, October 31, there's a little monsters' disco featuring DJ Spooky Pants. Adult enter free, kids are $13 to $15 (depending on age). Tickets MUST be purchased before the event; NO tickets will be sold at the door.

This place sounds amazing! Houston is long overdue for a cool modern artsy venue other than the Children's Museum, and the best part in my opinion is it's located minutes from the Heights. Can't wait to see how this place is going to look. We got our tickets!

This friday (Oct 9, 2009)Clifford will be at Barnes n' Noble in Deerbrook Mall for a book read. Don't miss your opportunity to capture a nice photo of your little one next to the big dopey dog we all come to love (even if we tried so hard not too).

Dewberry Farm

This Saturday the youngin' and I are heading out to Katy to visit Dewberry Farm. Since becoming a parent I decided I want to cram in as many fun/cool things to do during fall and especially in the month of October; simply because it's my favorite month,so Dewberry was added to the calender.

This place seems to have everything possible to kick start fall, seriously. Just to name a few there's a:
Corn maze
Pumpkin patch
pig races
petting zoo

In addition, I'm pretty siked about capturing some classic photos to send to family and friends. I don't want to count my chickens, but I think we're in for a hog-killin' time.

Barnes & Noble event!

Saturday September 19, 2009 at 11:00 am, Barnes & Noble will be reading Curious George by H. A. Rey. You know, the book readings may not be the greatest but whenever they include a costume character in the mix, it's totally worth showing up. So to top storytime off, special guest Curious George will be in the house. Don't forget to bring your camera

Something free

While driving home from the book store this afternoon, I noticed two McDonalds' employees passing out coupons on the side of the road, I pick one up and it was for a free angus burger (no purchase necessary). I'm not sure if everyone gets down with packing on 820 calories in one serving, not including the fries, but if you have an appreciation for gourmet burgers try one for free at a McDonalds near you.

Getting ready!

I've decided to throw a Halloween/birthday soiree for my goblin. It took my husband and I a while to figure out exactly what we were going to do for her 2nd birthday, but now that we know, we're siked about purchasing all the little things that will make this monster bash a killer. I will post more about the party later.

Moreover, I want to share with you this amazing witch hat I purchase from a cool little Houston Heights boutique called Oo la la. The hat is made from felt, tulle, sequence, and spooky little spiders hanging from the rim. I love it because it's different, funky, and keeps me in vogue.
This lovely hat goes for $20.00, it's well worth it. There's still a few designs left, but they're going fast.
